Nu Instruments | Enhanced Abundance Sensitivity for Actinide Measurements

This application note introduces the Enhanced Abundance Transfer Optic (EATO), designed to improve abundance sensitivity during uranium isotope measurements. The enhancement delivers significantly reduced peak tailing without compromising sensitivity or stability.

Abundance sensitivity is critical for accurate actinide isotope analysis, particularly when small isotopic abundances occur alongside major isotope peaks. The EATO accessory was developed to further improve the already strong abundance sensitivity of the Plasma 3 platform.


The device reduces the number of argon species entering the analyser, leading to substantially lower peak tailing. Testing was performed using repeated measurements of a uranium reference material.


Results showed abundance sensitivity improvements of more than an order of magnitude when used with the deceleration filter. At the same time, sensitivity and mass bias stability were maintained, supporting demanding nuclear and actinide applications.
