Nu Instruments | Accurate Iron Isotope Ratio Measurements Using MC-ICP-MS

This study demonstrates the ability of the Nu Plasma II MC-ICP-MS to deliver precise and accurate iron isotope ratios. Measurements show excellent agreement with published reference values and robust interference management in high-resolution mode.

Iron isotopes 54Fe, 56Fe, 57Fe and 58Fe partially resolved from their respective interferences in the Pseudo-High Resolution mode using the 50 μm source defining slit.

Iron isotope studies are increasingly important in environmental, geological and mineralogical research. This application note presents iron isotope measurements performed on certified and laboratory reference materials.


Measurements were collected in pseudo-high-resolution mode, allowing partial separation of iron isotopes from common spectral interferences. Results were generated using a sample-standard bracketing approach and demonstrated strong agreement with published literature values.


The instrument produced highly reproducible isotope ratios while maintaining stable mass-dependent fractionation behaviour throughout the analytical campaign. These results confirm the suitability of the system for advanced iron isotope investigations.
