This note compares single collector and multicollection methods for small Xe samples. It shows how the 5F5M Noblesse measures all Xe isotopes in three mass steps while improving precision for small-sample analysis.

 Single collector measurements used IC2, but did not include the minor isotopes 124Xe and 126Xe.

The 5F5M Noblesse enables Xe multicollection, measuring all Xe isotopes in three mass steps. Zoom optics support precise alignment with the fixed collector array, while hydrocarbon interferences are resolved.


The note compares single collector peak jumping with three-step ion-counting multicollection for small Xe samples. Multicollection collected more ions in the same overall analysis time, improving the precision of raw isotope ratios.


Results show that multicollection reduced relative standard deviations for nXe/¹³²Xe ratios by an average factor of 0.67. Uncalibrated multicollection ratios reached RSD values down to 0.2%, consistent with counting statistics.
