Nu Instruments | High Resolution Clumped Isotope Analysis of O₂ 

This application note explains high-resolution clumped isotope analysis of O₂ using the Perspective IS. It highlights simultaneous Δ³⁶ and Δ³⁵ measurement, reduced interference corrections and long-term precision.

The Perspective IS is configured to measure oxygen isotopologues at masses 32–36, including low-abundance clumped signals at masses 35 and 36. Enhanced resolving power allows these signals to be measured while separating key isobaric interferences.


High-resolution edge resolution helps remove the influence of species such as ³⁶Ar and chlorine-related interferences. This reduces the need for ³⁶Ar corrections and can simplify sample preparation by avoiding repeated gas chromatography clean-up steps.


Long-term measurements of oxygen from air over five months showed stable Δ³⁶ and Δ³⁵ performance. The reported external precision was ±0.047‰ for Δ³⁶ and ±0.086‰ for Δ³⁵, demonstrating strong measurement stability.
