Nu Instruments | Routine Batch Carbonate Analysis with Nu Carb and Perspective IRMS

This application note evaluates routine carbonate batch analysis using the Nu Carb automated carbonate device and Perspective IRMS. It reviews throughput, reproducibility, sample rejection rates and performance across two preparation systems.

Long term reproducibility of Nu carb batch analysis

The Nu Carb automated carbonate device was tested with the Perspective IRMS for routine batch analysis of carbonate samples. The study used Carrara marble samples ranging from 24–104 µg, prepared across 39 batches and analysed using the same mass spectrometer and reference gas.

The work compared two Nu Carb systems connected to the same IRMS. Together, they produced 1,579 analyses with only 12 rejected samples, demonstrating strong reliability for routine laboratory workflows.

Long-term reproducibility was assessed across batches analysed between March and July 2013. The reported external standard deviation of batch mean values was 0.012‰ for raw δ⁴⁵ and 0.024‰ for raw δ⁴⁶, supporting stable performance over time.

Key Takeaways:

  • Clumped isotope studies require high sensitivity, high resolution and stable baselines.
  • Electrostatic analyser arrays help reduce scattered background around minor peaks.
  • Panorama and Aspect provide purpose-built options for demanding isotope applications.
