Nu Instruments | Fixed Slit Innovation for Improved Attom ES Flexibility and Lifetime

This application note explains how a new fixed slit design helps the Attom ES combine reproducible resolution switching with longer slit lifetime. The design supports flexible method development while reducing the need for frequent consumable replacement.

High resolution magnetic sector ICP-MS depends on precise slit control to separate analytes from polyatomic interferences. Traditional variable slits offer flexibility, while fixed slits offer reproducibility, but each approach has trade-offs in lifetime, repeatability and ease of use.

The Attom ES fixed slit design uses vertically movable slit plates with multiple slit positions. This allows worn areas to be bypassed and enables different resolutions to be selected without compromising the reproducibility required for routine analysis.

The application note shows how the design supports resolutions from 300 Rp to >10,000 Rp. It also demonstrates stable peak position and reproducible resolution switching during extended sample runs.
