Nu Instruments | Laser Ablation U-Pb Geochronology with High Resolution ICP-MS

This application note shows how the Attom HR-ICP-MS combines precise U-Pb geochronology with trace element analysis during a single laser ablation experiment. The approach supports detailed geological and mineralogical investigations.

20 μm diameter ablation pits in Moacyr monazite.

Laser ablation ICP-MS is widely used for isotope dating and elemental characterisation of geological materials. The Attom system combines rapid scanning capabilities with high sensitivity to support both applications simultaneously.

The instrument was coupled to a laser ablation system to measure U-Th-Pb isotope ratios in zircon and monazite minerals. Trace element concentrations, including rare earth elements, were acquired alongside geochronological data.

The results demonstrate accurate and precise age determination while preserving spatial resolution and minimising sample consumption. Combining isotope ratios and elemental chemistry in one analysis provides valuable geological insight.
